All units, including all repeat units, are counted to compute student load. A normal load is 15 units. Work Experience units are included in the student load.
The summer session is one-third to one-half shorter than fall or spring semester, and the accelerated pace and intensity may make subject areas more difficult for students. Therefore, 6 units in a summer session may be equivalent to a full-time load during the regular semester. Students who wish to enroll in more than 6 units during the summer should consider this and consult with a counselor for assistance in summer planning.
In the Fall 1992 Semester, Santa Rosa Junior College began enforcing a unit limitation policy for students. The purpose of this policy is to enhance student success by discouraging unreasonable unit overloads, minimize the course shopping phenomenon, and provide a more equitable distribution of impacted course seats throughout the six levels of student priorities and new student registration.
- Continuing students will be limited to a total of 16 units during the priority registration period (Priority 1, 1A, 2, 3, 4, 5). Some students will have to plan their registration carefully so that their priority enrollment is not greater than 16 units.
- Continuing students may register up to the 20 unit limit immediately after priority registration is over. Hence, continuing students can increase units when open registration begins. Since most new student registration begins with an open registration period, they will be able to register for 20 units even at initial registration.
- Students may petition to exceed 20 units. Evidence of ability to succeed in units exceeding 20 units is required, such as: cumulative GPA of 3.0; 75 percent of grades are positive progress; good academic progress standing; other special documentation; and counselor/faculty recommendation.
